Axial Fans and Blowers

Fans and blowers are the simplest and most cost-efficient method of increasing air-cooled thermal performance. Adding a fan or blower to a natural convection solution improves heat transfer by directing cooler air into, around and/or over primary thermal device, forcing heat and hot air out of an assembly.

Have a Question?

What Are Axial Fans?

Fans are an active component where a motor rotates a bladed impeller around a central axis to force air movement. Air flows straight along the fan axis.

What Are Blowers?

Blowers pull intake air along the rotation axis and direct flow perpendicular to that axis with the blower housing. Blowers have a higher pressure drop than fans, which allows the blower to push air harder against flow resistances like heat sinks or tight air ducting.

How Do Fans and Blowers Work?

Fans and blowers force air over a thermal component like a heat sink or heat exchanger. Blowers and fans push air warmed by hot surfaces out of the assembly with cooler air. Forced air maintains a constant flow of cool air to decrease heat source temperatures and dissipate heat safely away from sensitive components.

Why Use Fans for Air Cooling?

Improve the performance of your air cooled thermal management solution by increasing air flow and heat transfer with fans or blowers. When ambient environment or natural convection cooling cannot sustain enough heat transfer for higher power applications, fans and forced air convection cooling are designed to manipulate this environment. Increased airflow to forced convection heat sinks enable engineers to dissipate more heat load within a similar volume.

Boyd’s Integrated Design Approach

Our wholistic approach to designing extreme air cooling encompasses the entire airflow process, from intake, ducting, fans and blowers, to advanced heat sinks and heat exchangers, and exhausts. Boyd’s engineering team optimizes not just design, but the manufacturability of fan and blower based solutions.

Axial Fan Technologies

Efficiently Spread and Transport Heat

Heat pipes integrated into other thermal technologies create a more wholistic, higher performing, more efficient thermal management solution. Heat pipes enhance air cooling with higher thermal conductivity and can transport heat, spread heat, or improve air-cooled heat sink efficiency to delay the need for liquid cooled solutions in increasing heat loads.

Blower Technologies

High Performance Air Cooling in a Variety of Formats

Blowers can handle a greater pressure drop, which is ideal for use with high fin density heat sinks and heat exchangers for high performance cooling. Blowers generate air flow perpendicular to the inlet(s), allowing for more flexibility in housing geometry. This also enables more localized cooling and greater creativity in system design.

Low-Profile-Blowers

Low Profile Blowers

Low-profile blowers are ideal for hot spot cooling or high performance electronics in thin formats like consumer electronics. Low profile blowers generate localized, highly directional cooling, typically used in conjunction with a low profile advanced heat sink, heat pipes, or vapor chambers.
