Consumers expect products to perform well in harsh environments. Environmental Control & Ruggedization Technologies enable products to withstand tough use by protecting sensitive components from dust and debris, moisture, and other unwanted contaminants. These technologies help manage exposure to extreme temperatures, thermal cycling stress, UV, high shock and vibration as well as other extreme conditions. By controlling the impact to and performance of a device in demanding conditions, manufacturers extend the lifetime and reliability of consumer products.

Boyd’s material selection, engineering, testing, and precision converting expertise enable us to help you select, design, and fabricate the right ruggedization technology to efficiently manage internal energy and protect against external debris and environmental factors. Improve customer satisfaction and protect the long-term reliable performance and safety of your product with effective Environmental Control & Ruggedization.

Boyd utilizes a wide array of protection and sealing technologies and materials to help ruggedize our customers’ products. In this section, learn more about the different ways we can mitigate environmental impact on products by:

  • Implementing protective covers and tough materials to reduce Wear & Surface Protection
  • Designing isolating solutions to absorb and dissipate Shock, Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH)
  • Adding materials to mitigate Buzz, Squeak & Rattle (BSR) to improve Acoustics and customer experience
  • Improved signal clarity and performance with Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) & Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) Management materials and gaskets
  • Preventing Corrosion, and Particle & Dust ingress that can wear down or destroy internal components your system relies on

Wear & Surface Protection

Harsh Environments expose surfaces and components to abrasive materials which can degrade the functionality of critical surfaces. Optical, mating, and high traffic surfaces require adequate surface protection to ensure long lasting performance.

Our Wear & Surface Protection technologies include a wide variety of protective films, tough sheets, and rubber over molded hardware to meet a broad range of specific use and application requirements. Boyd’s precision converting and material expertise includes films that cling to surfaces for shipping and handling, permanent films that enhance the base material’s ability to resist chipping and scratches, and optical films for protecting screens without degrading visual performance. We can help you select the right material for your product and ensure proper material compatibility. In addition, our process control enables us to provide bubble-free and smooth applications in the format you need for your assembly.

Shock, Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH)

Sudden movement or excessive vibration can jar components apart and cause irreparable damage to delicate systems within a product. In order to fabricate a rugged product, your design must include methodologies to address noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) as well as shock.

Between Boyd’s material expertise, precision converting and assembly processes, we’re able to help you design and fabricate components that mitigate negative impacts of intermittent mechanical stressors on your product. With components like foams, adhesives, stamped metal components, we can help you create a solution to absorb and dissipate mechanical energy in order to protect your product.

Buzz, Squeak & Rattle (BSR) and Acoustics

Acoustics can negatively impact user experience and stealth, negatively impacting product adoption and customer satisfaction. Irritating noises cast doubt on product quality and reduce the likelihood of customers to purchase, keep, and recommend your product. Defense applications rely on quiet operation for the safety of field units. Workplace regulations limit a person’s exposure to excessive acoustics, which can be a problem in locations like datacenters with thousands of fans and pumps.

Boyd has a broad portfolio of material solutions and converting methods to produce solutions for Buzz, Squeak & Rattle issues. Because As BSR issues are difficult to plan for, our quick turn prototyping capabilities for damping shims, spacers, and vibration isolation solutions make us a great partner in resolving BSR problems issues that can halt a production line.

Our high-performance Double Width Double Inlet (DWDI) Blowers are an ideal alternative to dual axial fans that produce comparable flow rates with improved pressure drop and acoustic performance. DWDI Blowers can reduce acoustic interference with read-write errors, quieter performance for users.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) & Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) Management

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) or radio frequency interference (RFI) disrupts the normal operation of electrical devices. Seams and openings in electronic devices provide pathways for energy waves to enter or exit a device, which can cause irregular and unreliable performance.

Boyd helps our customers select the right EMI shielding material and geometry for their product to help maintain product functionality. We help you design optimal shielding gaskets and cabinet seals to optimize the long-term shielding and sealing performance of your application.

Corrosion, Particulates & Dust

Consumers demand more resilient products, which means OEMs need to protect against corrosion, particulates and dust. Surfaces unprotected against foreign particles can wear faster and require more frequent replacement. Moisture or debris can short electronics which increases warranty claims. Cameras, sensors, speakers, microphones, input and charger ports are all potential ingress locations on electronics, which require adequate protection for longer product lifetimes.

Moving components are susceptible to wear and tear from sand, dust and debris. Protecting components like handles, shifters, and electronic interfaces with buttons and keypads, reduces wear on a device and extends the lifetime, safety and reliability of complete systems.

Foreign particles and corrosion can foul and clog up fluid systems, ingress protection and filters are critical to their longevity. Filters, IP seals, particle guards, plugs, and caps prevent debris from entering these fluid systems thus improving reliability and reducing maintenance requirements.

Boyd utilizes a broad range of manufacturing technologies and materials to create sealing and protection solutions to prevent against corrosion, dust and particles. Learn more about how these methods and how Boyd integrates that into our customer products:

Extreme Temperatures

We’re seeing more products and systems exposed to extreme temperatures or extreme temperature swings. To ensure that these systems last as long as possible, designers can implement smart material choices or intelligent control systems to mitigate the effects of temperature changes.

Material selection acts as the foundation of extreme temperature technologies. Selecting the right compounds or other materials for the whole system determines its maximum operating temperature range. Internal components may also be protected with shielding or insulation to help protect from temperature extremes.

Smart systems that utilize internal sensors to regulate system temperatures with either heating or cooling elements are another way for complex products to withstand extreme temperatures.
